Not since Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor met on the set of Cleopatra, has a love triangle caused such a stir in Hollywood circles. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie popularized the fad of amalgamating first names together to represent a coupled unit, a.k.a. Brangelina.
By Angelina’s own admission they did fall in love on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith and the unplanned chemistry slowly crept in while filming.
“Because of the film, we ended up being brought together to do all these crazy things, and I think we found this strange friendship and partnership that kind of just suddenly happened. I think a few months in I realized, ‘God, I can’t wait to get to work.’ … Anything we had to do with each other, we just found a lot of joy in it together and a lot of real teamwork. We just became kind of a pair.”
This sounds like the perfect foundation of a friendship-turned-romance but what do both of their charts say?
Brad Pitt was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma on December 18, 1963, 6:31 a.m. Mr. Pitt is an energetic and feisty Sagittarius. Brad’s Ascendant also falls at 11˚ Sagittarius which is quite fortuitous because the Ascendant is your outer appearance that you project to the world and the Sun is your ego. So in Brad’s case, what you see is what your get. There is no mismatch. Most of his planets fall on the eastern hemisphere (in natal chart reading the hemispheres oppose each other) of his chart which means he can be self-assertive with a strong belief in self. He has 2 personal planets in the first house, Mars and the Sun; of course, the Sun being the most important one. It is safe to say he is not an insecure man and is quite comfortable in his own skin. He is not only unusually hunky, but unusually confident, too. Yeah, kind of unfair. One note to keep in mind about Sag’s is that they have a generous philanthropic side. Brad Pitt set up a foundation, Make It Right Foundation to help out with the rebuilding of New Orleans post hurricane Katrina.
His Moon and Venus are in the second house in the traditional sign of Capricorn. The Moon and Venus in a man’s chart represent the kind of woman they seek and are attracted to. He may be the ultimate heartthrob but he seeks an earthy, grounded, family-oriented woman. The Moon also represents our innermost emotional nature and what makes us feel secure. So once he has wrapped up playing Hercules on the movie set, Brad Pitt needs to go home to the security of his home-base to feel safe and re-energize. Quite the paradox.
Angelina was born on June 4, 1975 at 9:09 a.m. in Los Angeles, California. She is a witty, spritely Gemini with a nurturing and mothering Cancer Ascendant. In Angelina’s case we have the discrepancy between her Sun sign and Ascendant. In this instance, what you see is not what you get. Her ethereal watery Ascendant belies her frenetic, restless, mercurial Sun. Of special interest in Angelina’s chart is, that Venus sits right smack on top of her Ascendant within the degree. Of course, it is no surprise that she is considered one of the sexiest women in Hollywood and a bit of a femme fatale. Venus making an exact aspect to the Ascendant is an indicator of beauty, grace and sex-appeal in the natal chart.
Angelina’s chart is full of contradictions. She is full of vim and vigor as shown by her stellium in Aries in the 9th house. Her 9th house stellium accounts for her interest in her philanthropic work with children and women. It also shows her more adventurous side. It is not unusual for her to travel to remote locations to help out with a charitable cause. It also makes us understand her alter ego Lara Croft. Adventure is very near and dear to her and it is what she needs to feel centered since it is her lunar-based requirement. Her spirited Arian planets trine very nicely with Brad Pitt’s Sun and Ascendant. It is their shared love of philanthropic work and adventure that brought them together. What could be sexier than Lara Croft meeting Hercules? Despite this amazing blend of fiery planets, this same grouping of planets clash with her mate’s stellium in Capricorn. Unfortunately, this may not lend itself to domestic bliss. I will discuss this in further detail below. This clash of planets also helps explain why these two are constantly moving around and trying to find a new home base. The Arian Moon Angelina loves this, while it unsettles poor old goat Moon Brad.
So what brought these two incredibly alluring specimens together so they could procreate and fill the planet with their progeny? At the root of the attraction is that they both fulfill the core desired traits each has for a partner as defined by their natal chart. What does that mean? The house of “the other” or partner is the 7th house opposite the 1st house. It is sometimes referred to as the Descendant. Brad’s Descendant is at 11˚ Gemini. Angie’s Sun sits at 13˚ Gemini. A luminary, either Sun or Moon sitting closely to a partner’s 7th house cusp is one of the biggest indicators of attraction in a romantic context. In essence, Brad finds airy, Gemini women attractive and suitable marriage partners. Angelina happens to fit the bill to a tee. Angelina’s Descendant sits at 28˚ Capricorn. Both Brad’s Moon and Venus conjunct this point in Angelina’s chart. Brad has a stellium of Mars, Mercury, Moon and Venus in Capricorn. He is also 12 years older. It is very common for individuals with Cancer Ascendants to choose older and more mature partners. Without a doubt Brad embodies Angelina’s masculine ideal. It‘s a double-whammy which is nice when you can get it.
Another interesting note about Brad and Angelina’s 1st and 7th house axis is that both of their Vertexes reside there. The Vertex is referred to as the second Ascendant and is often treated as another angle in the chart. The Vertex/Anti-vertex axis has also been considered the axis of destined or fated encounters with others, if a planet or point conjuncts the Vertex or Anti-vertex. Having someone’s Vertex conjuncting an important point or planet has an incredible magnetic pull that is next to impossible to resist. Brad’s Vertex is at 27˚ Cancer conjunct Angelina’s Venus and Ascendant which signifies deep physical attraction. Angelina’s Vertex at 10˚ Sagittarius is conjunct her Neptune at 10˚ in Sagittarius sitting on top of Brad’s Ascendant. Again, this is a sign of intense physical attraction that is very hard to resist. With her Neptune sitting on Brad’s Ascendant it is a little bit tricky because it is the planet of smoke and mirrors. The Ascendant person usually views the Neptune person with rose-colored glasses and may not see the reality as it is. In the initial stages of the romance this may seem like a blessing but as time goes on it can create feelings of confusion and disillusionment.
Brad and Angelina have numerous romantic and intimate aspects from their personal planets aspecting their Ascendant/Descendant axis that indicate immediate chemistry. But what about the long-term aspects that hold the relationship together? You have two individuals with very different emotional natures as I pointed out earlier. Both approach problems from very different perspectives. As mentioned before, Brad has a stellium of Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus in serious-minded, traditional practical Capricorn. His approach will always be to choose the steady, deliberate path while Angelina has her Moon, Mars and Jupiter in independent, impulsive Aries. She will zig while he zags. Her Arian planets are squaring Brad’s Capricorn planets which is a source of excitement but also an incredible source of frustration which may not be easily resolved. Do they have explosive arguments? My bet would be yes! I would say Brad has spent his share of nights in the doghouse. Luckily Brad has his Jupiter at 9˚ Aries conjuncting Angelina’s Moon/Mars combo. Having Jupiter in that position creates an enormous amount of goodwill and generosity. Brad’s Jupiterian spirit helps smooth over any discord that might erupt between them.
I always like to see Saturn making key contacts with the other points in the chart to determine if there is enough glue to hold the relationship together. This seems to be Old Father Time’s domain. The Jolie-Pitts do have them. Brad’s Aquarian Saturn trines Angelina’s Sun and makes a nice sextile to her Moon/Mars conjunction in Aries which goes a long way to add stability to the union. Angelina’s Saturn is opposing Brad’s stellium in Capricorn. Not an easy configuration which can lead a couple to be critical of each other. Angelina’s Saturn is also conjuncting Brad’s North Node. These two feel a responsibility towards each other and the need to make a commitment to each other. They share a destiny together. The bond was there before making it official last year and they certainly have been through some trials and tribulations over the last year with her health woes. Many astrologers will say that nodal contacts also indicate a karmic, past life involvement. Whether it is true or not, these connections are always seen in the charts of committed long-term relationships. Nodal contacts are very common in family relationships, as well. Brad’s nodal axis is square Angelina’s Moon/Mars conjunction. So one could say that this union was written in the stars and these two lovers were meant to come together. Excitement is always close by with these two and it is not surprising that their union crystalized on the set while filming the action movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It was meant to be but will it last? No astrologer can predict that but they have survived for an entire decade under intense scrutiny from the media and paparazzi. They just celebrated their first wedding anniversary. I am sucker for “happily ever after” so I will be rooting for them.
