Of course synastry is not just about love and romance. Some of the most intriguing synastry can be our relationships with our other loved ones…our families. It would seem we are born into these relationships against our will, yet in some cases, they can to be our biggest teachers.
One such relationship, is the relationship of Fab Four Paul McCartney and his famous fashion designer daughter Stella McCartney. Being the child of a celebrity can be a curse rather than a blessing. These children have the privilege of living lives of glamour and wealth but they are always overshadowed by their famous parent. They don’t always live happily ever after as we have seen in such cases as Bobbi Kristina Brown, Cameron Douglas, Christian Brando and Peaches Geldof.
So it is refreshing to see how Stella McCartney achieved the impossible. She found success in her own right – away from the spotlight of her famous father. Today, she is known as one of Britain’s most successful fashion designers. It is fair to say that none of the other offsprings of the Beatles have been able to manage it. One does have to wonder where Stella gets her drive to succeed and what role, if any, did her famous parents played in her success?
Stella Nina McCartney was born on September 13, 1971 in Lambeth, London. Unfortunately, we do not have a time of birth for Stella so we do not know her ascendant. According to Paul, himself, Stella’s birth was a difficult one. She was born by emergency caesarean section. The sweet, heart-warming anecdote about her birth was that Paul was outside the hospital room praying for her safe delivery and he came up with the name for his band “Wings.” His prayer was for his baby daughter to be delivered on the wings of an angel.
By all accounts, hers was a modest upbringing. Her family lived on an organic farm in Sussex, raising farm animals and growing vegetables. She and her family are vegetarians. Her parents sent her to public school. So, it should come as no surprise that Stella has a modest, earthy Virgo Sun. That Virgo Sun is conjunct her Venus in Virgo. Venus, of course, is the goddess of beauty and aesthetics. Stella’s fashion lines very much reflect that Sun/Venus conjunction in Virgo. There is a simplicity to her designs. The lines are clean and flowing. The material is loose and drapes nicely. No animal products or leather are used in her designs. Her bohemian chic mother Linda McCartney has always been cited as Stella’s inspiration and muse for her designs. When designing for Adidas and the British Olympic team, functionality of the team outfits was a huge concern for her, in true Virgo fashion.
Stella has a nurturing emotional Cancer Moon. As a Cancer Moon, Stella relishes in her role of motherhood. She has 4 young children with husband, Alasdhair Willis who she has been married to since 2003. She herself enjoyed a very close relationship with her own mother Linda McCartney.
James Paul McCartney was born in the middle of World War 2 on June 18, 1942, 2:00 a.m. in Liverpool, England. Paul was always dubbed the fun, happy-go-lucky Beatle; meanwhile John Lennon was the brooding, tortured, artistic soul.
Paul has a spritely, sociable Gemini Sun closely conjuncting his benefic, optmistic Jupiter in Cancer. Paul also has a wonderful sunny stellium of Pluto, Mars and Moon in creative, dramatic Leo further enhancing his optimism. Having so many planets in Leo also makes Paul a hopeless romantic. He has not given up on love and is currently on his third marriage. What is really interesting is that when you single out Beatle songs that Paul wrote, they have a very distinct McCartney signature, which is always cheerful, fun, romantic and optimistic such as; I Saw Her Standing There, All My Loving, Can´t Buy Me Love, Eight Days a Week, Drive My Car, Yellow Submarine, Lovely Rita, Got to Get You Into My Life, Good Day Sunshine, Here, There and Everywhere and Hey Jude.
Paul has a dreamy creative Pisces Ascendant which helps with his song writing. His writing collaboration with John Lennon is one of the most impressive of the 60s. As a team, they penned close to a 1000 songs. The Pisces Ascendant has also made him a champion of animal rights and vegetarianism.
Both McCartney’s, father and daughter have received accolades from the British Empire. Paul was knighted in 1997. Stella received the prestigious Order of the British Empire for her design work for the British Olympic team. So, what is the relationship between father and daughter like? The first thing that stands out in this father and daughter synastry chart is that Paul’s Neptune is conjuncting Stella’s Sun/Venus conjunction in Virgo. From Stella’s point of view, her father is larger than life figure and she puts him on a pedestal. He is an inspiration to her but he is an elusive confusing figure in her world also. In synastry, the outer planet person holds the power in the relationship.
Paul for his part, adores his daughter. Creatively they share many artistic pursuits in common. Stella’s Sun/Venus conjunction is trining Paul’s Venus in Taurus. One of the early stories about Stella is that she expressed her love of fashion at a very tender young age. Both Paul and Linda encouraged her interest by letting her apprentice with Paul’s tailor for a number of years. Fast forward a few years into the future, Stella studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the early 1990s. On her graduation in 1995, her famous father penned a song for her called Stella May Day which was played as her friends, Naomi Campell and Kate Moss modelled her creations.
The love between father and daughter is further evidenced by the sextile of Stella’s watery Cancer Moon to Paul’s earthy Taurus Venus. Stella’s Moon also trines Sir Paul’s Piscean Ascendant. Without a doubt there is a loving bond between these two.
However, it has not been all roses. Paul and Stella have a very explosive and fiery opposition in their synastry. Stella’s cool rational Mars in Aquarius opposes Paul’s Moon/Pluto/Mars stellium in Leo. This can be an explosive and confrontational aspect. Stella being fiercely loyal to her mother’s memory was openly vocal about her dislike of the second Mrs. McCartney, Heather Mills. It is rumoured that she begged Paul not marry Mills. These two fashion designers did not get along with each other and this put Macca right in the middle. What is interesting about this opposition is that it is right along Stella’s nodal axis which is very karmic in nature. It is very common for family members to have nodal connections in their charts. You could say that this confrontation was written in the stars.
McCartney did end up divorcing Heather Mills which cost him a big chunk of his fortune. The divorce was acrimonious and played out publicly in front of the tabloids. I am sure there is a part of him that wished he had heeded to his daughter’s advice. Interestingly his north node in Virgo is conjunct Stella’s Mercury. Perhaps Stella is sometimes the teacher and Paul is the student. At their core, for better or worse, family relationships are like being in a classroom. They are here to teach us.
Paul has since remarried Nancy Shevell. By all accounts, Nancy and Stella get along very well. The two famous McCartneys have put the unpleasant chapter behind them.
